Benchmark and intervention kits through the Fountas and Pinnell literacy system were purchased by Governor Haley and The Original Six Foundation for Kelly Edwards Elementary School.  Here’s a letter from Kelly Edwards Elementary School’s Reading Coach on the impact the kits will have on students.

“First, let me thank Governor Haley and The Original Six Foundation again for their generous donation of purchasing the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment kits for our teachers at Kelly Edwards Elementary School. In previous years, there has not been a universal screening to assess student reading levels. Thanks to the Governor and her foundation, we were able to determine each student’s independent and instructional reading levels. Teachers are now able to observe student reading behaviors one-on-one, engage them in comprehension conversations that go beyond retelling, and make informed decisions that connect assessment to instruction.

Teachers now have one of the most reliable resources to accurately and reliably identify each child’s instructional and independent reading levels and to document their progress through one-on-one formative and summative assessments. The Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment Systems provide the teachers with precise tools and texts to observe and quantify specific reading behaviors, so they can interpret and use data to plan meaningful instruction.

Thank you again for your generosity by giving to such a great cause of providing resources to help educate students. Everyone here at Kelly Edwards is grateful to Governor Haley and The Original Six Foundation. Your donations will help make a difference at our school. The children and their education are so very important to making our schools and our community strong.”

Sincerely,

Egeria Bostick
