UNION COUNTY ADULT EDUCATION
On May 1, The Original Six Foundation partnered with the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and purchased 10 new computers for Union County Adult Education. Each computer has a leveled literacy program called Reading Horizons Elevate installed. Reading Horizons Elevate is a software program that helps students with their reading skills by teaching them at their own level. Students practice their reading skills through interactive lessons that continuously adjust to each student's skill level.

DILLON COUNTY DAY 

Columbia, S.C. – Governor Nikki Haley and The Original Six Foundation announced today that Dillon County Day is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 29, 2014 from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Dillon County Day is taking place in partnership with the 25th Annual McLeod Medical Center Dillon Health Fair. The activities will take place at the City of Dillon Wellness Center located at 1647 Commerce Drive in Dillon, S.C. 

Dillon County Day marks the eighth community day The Original Six Foundation has organized as a part of a major statewide initiative designed to help provide the tools and resources needed for challenged South Carolina communities to grow and succeed.

“Dillon County has so much potential and we are very excited to be raising awareness and providing the needed support through our partnership with the 25th Annual McLeod Medical Center Dillon Health Fair,” said Gov. Nikki Haley. “This is all about neighbors helping neighbors and we are incredibly encouraged by the individuals, businesses, churches, and community organizations who want to help the lift up Dillon County and make it an even better place to live and raise a family.”

In partnership with McLeod Medical Center Dillon and hundreds of community volunteers, The Original Six Foundation will provide a variety of resources and support that were determined to be essential through collaboration with local leaders in Dillon County. Activities include a health fair, which will provide plenty of family fun while highlighting the importance of personal health maintenance. Thanks to generous funding from the McLeod Health Foundation, the health fair will offer free and low cost screenings as well as information about health care programs and Medicaid eligibility.

The first 200 school-age children (18 years and younger) to complete a minimum of four health screenings are eligible for a sports ball of their choice. 

The low cost screenings are as follows (all other screenings are free of charge): 

 Complete Blood Count/Chemistry Profile/Thyroid Test - $25

Lipid Profile - $20

Mammogram - $55

Prostate Cancer screening (blood test recommended for males over 50) - $15 

EKG - $15

Hemoglobin A1C - $15

To reduce wait times and lines on the day of the Health Fair, pre-registration for paid health screenings is encouraged. Pre-registration will be held Monday, March 17 through Friday, March 21 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the McLeod Dillon hospital lobby. Anyone having blood work performed should not eat twelve hours prior to coming to the health fair.  For more information on the health screenings, please contact McLeod Reservations and Scheduling at 843-777-2005 or 1-800-667-2005.

Additional activities will include a job fair that will provide attendees the opportunity to work on their resume and link them with onsite employers.  Information about continuing education programs and a baby shower for expectant mothers will also be available at 1:00 PM.  Lunch during the event will be free for all and Cocky’s Reading Express will take place at 11:15 AM.

First 200 School-age Children to Get Four Health Screenings will Receive a Free Backpack complements of Walmart.

Columbia, S.C. – Governor Nikki Haley and The Original Six Foundation announced today Union County Day scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 10, 2013 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  The activities will take place at University of South Carolina Union located at 309 East Academy Street in Union, S.C. This event will be the seventh community day The Original Six Foundation has organized as a part of a major statewide initiative that will help provide the tools and resources needed for challenged South Carolina communities to grow economically.

“Union County has so much potential and raising awareness with events such as Union County Day will encourage family projects, school and church projects and civic group projects from all areas of the state that will lift up our neighbors in Union County and beyond.  I am encouraged by the level of interest we have had from individuals, businesses, organizations, churches and groups who want to show Union County that neighbors helping neighbors will make South Carolina an even better place to live," said Gov. Haley.

In partnership with hundreds of community volunteers, the foundation will provide a variety of components and resources that were determined in collaboration with local leaders in Union County.  Activities include a Health Fair, which will provide plenty of family fun while highlighting the importance of personal health maintenance. The Health Fair will offer free medical, dental, eye, chiropractic and diabetic screenings as well as information about health programs and Medicaid eligibility.  The first 200 school-age children (18 years and younger) to complete a minimum of four health screenings are eligible for a backpack of their choice.  In addition, DHEC will be offering free TDAP vaccinations, and these vaccinations are required for all students entering 7th grade.

Additional activities will include a job fair that will provide attendees the opportunity to work on their resume and link them with onsite employers.  Information about continuing education programs and a baby shower for expectant mothers will also be available.  Lunch during the event will be free for all.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS STATEWIDE BOOK DRIVE
 
COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Governor Nikki Haley, The Original Six Foundation’s Board of Directors, AT&T and the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles will announce a statewide book drive to benefit children from rural counties at the Richland Library Eastover on Monday, July 29, at 9:30 AM.  The Original Six Foundation’s statewide book drive will be collecting gently used or new children’s and South Carolina history books. The public can donate books in collection boxes at all 67 DMVs across South Carolina from August 5 through August 17.  The books will be donated to libraries, schools, and after school programs in the rural counties that The Original Six Foundation serves. The Original Six Foundation is currently working in conjunction with Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Clarendon, Marion, Marlboro, and Union counties. This statewide book drive is being made possible by a contribution from AT&T. CLARENDON COUNTY DAY SET FOR MAY 18, 2013

Columbia, S.C. – Governor Nikki Haley and The Original Six Foundation announced today Clarendon County Day scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  The free activities will take place at Manning High School located at 2155 Paxville Highway in Manning, S.C. This event will be the sixth community day The Original Six Foundation has organized as a part of a major statewide initiative that will help provide the tools and resources needed for challenged South Carolina communities to grow economically.

“We want to support neighbors helping neighbors – from helping employers connect with employees to encouraging healthy families. Raising awareness throughout our state will encourage family projects, school and church projects, civic group projects from all areas of the state committed to helping our neighbors in Clarendon County and beyond," said Gov. Haley.

In partnership with hundreds of community volunteers, the foundation will provide a variety of components and resources that were determined in collaboration with local leaders in Clarendon County.  Activities include a Health Fair, which will provide plenty of family fun while highlighting the importance of personal health maintenance. The Health Fair will offer free medical, dental, eye, chiropractic and diabetic screenings as well as information about health programs. Walmart has donated 200 basketballs and soccer balls to be given away to the first 200 children who have four health screenings done. The Health Fair will offer the Tdap vaccination.  All students entering seventh gradein August 2013 must receive (or have received) a Tdap vaccine in order to attend school. 

Additional activities will include a job fair that will provide attendees the opportunity to work on their resume and link them with employers who will be on-site.  There will be job training workshops throughout the day to provide assistance to job seekers. Information about continuing education programs and literacy programs will also be available.  Cocky’s Reading Express will be on hand to perform a program in the Media Center at 12:30 p.m. Outdoor activities for children include a tennis clinic by the USTA and car seat safety checks. All of the events are free to the Clarendon County Public, and the day includes free lunch for all attendees.

ALLENDALE COUNTY: SOUTH CAROLINIANS COMING TOGETHER TO MAKE COMMUNITY TRACK A REALITY; COMMUNITY NEEDS ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

In recent years, Allendale Fairfax athletic teams have been very successful. Allendale Fairfax High School is home to a four-time State Champion Boys Track Team, a winning varsity football team plus varsity baseball and softball teams. Despite this incredible level of success, the teams do not have a track for practices or meets, and they have to travel over 40 miles round trip for practices every day. Read More . . .
